GRAN CANARIA WEATHER – The best climate in the world
Weather data study finds Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to have the best climate in the world
Gran Canaria is famous for its absolutely fabulous weather. If you are at all familiar with the island, you will surely know that sunshine and pleasant temperatures are practically guaranteed at any time of the year. Any yet, few people (even among the islanders themselves) have any idea just how exceptional Gran Canaria’s weather and climate actually are.
Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria, was ranked as the city with the best climate in the world in a 1996 scientific study called ‘Pleasant Weather Ratings’, by Thomas Whitmore, director of research on climatology at Syracuse University, New York.
Whitmore studied many years of official weather data for 600 cities worldwide, making comparisons with the ideal living and holiday weather conditions. The conclusion he reached was that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the only city in the world that deserves to be awarded a full 100 score for its perfect climate.
Gran Canaria weather – The ideal weather for enjoying life outdoors
Gran Canaria is just the place to be if you like to live life outdoors. Maspalomas and the rest of the south of the island enjoy even better weather than Las Palmas. With as many as 50 weeks of sunshine a year there won’t be much rain to spoil your plans!
The north and interior regions of Gran Canaria receive somewhat more rain in the winter, when their valleys are transformed by the lush vegetation that springs up to cover the beautiful volcanic landscape. Even so, rainy spells rarely last more than a day or two at most.
The average temperature on Gran Canaria is pleasant all year round, between 26ºC and 28ºC (79F – 82F) in the summer and from 22ºC to 24ºC (72F – 75F) during the winter months. With this sort of weather, you can enjoy the comfort of light clothing practically every day of the year.
You will also find the sea temperature around Gran Canaria to average a very inviting 22ºC (72F) for most of the year, rarely dropping below a tolerable 19ºC (66F) in winter. This makes Gran Canaria a veritable paradise for beach lovers.
Good weather is good for you
It goes without saying that bright sunny days are positively stimulating. There’s nothing like a healthy dose of sunshine to fill you with energy and joie de vivre.
Ample scientific research has shown that safe exposure to the sun’s rays boosts your immune system and, among many other beneficial effects, helps to lower blood pressure and stress. People with health problems find that Gran Canaria’s weather works wonders for them. For example, many people with rheumatism, asthma and skin allergies from the UK, Norway and other countries transfer to Gran Canaria because the good weather makes them feel better and consequently require much less treatment.
As though having fun in the sun all year round were not reason enough to choose to live in Gran Canaria, the island’s fabulous weather sounds like just what the doctor ordered as a basis for a very healthy lifestyle!
